This course provides an introduction to mathematical and computational aspects of the finite element method, a method for obtaining approximate solutions to partial differential equations.

  • Weak formulations of PDEs and formulation of the finite element method.
  • One- and two-dimensional applications involving scalar- and vector-valued problems.
  • Development of finite element codes in a Matlab environment.
  • Applications to problems of heat conduction, elasticity, and beams.
